"Dream World"

Songs, Poems and Stories
by Roger Hall

PineTree Press,
2nd edition, 2011

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the title song, "Dream World", written in 1961, this illustrated multimedia collection of words, music and pictures was compiled by songwriter Roger Hall.

It contains a Word document book (160 pages) containing his first song lyrics, a selection of his poems, and stories about his early strugggles and triumphs.

The first section has sixteen of his song lyrics, including the title song, and his first published song, "The Soho Serenade," which was made as a demo record, shown in this picture...

In the next section are thirty poems from the 1960s and '70s and are Roger's personal observations of the world around him. They include his bitter views of festive celebrations ("Carnival") and hectic work routines ("Big City"). On a more humorous side, he writes about the women he met on his travels while stationed in Germany ("European Flames: Six Limericks"). There are also poems with music themes, such as "Melody in G" and "Live On, Mozart!"

The third section has six stories covering the years from his youth to adulthood:

  • "Growing Up in Bloomfield" -- His early childhood in New Jersey and his love of cowboy film stars, especially Gene Autry and Hopalong Cassidy.
  • "E.M.A. at OHEKA" -- His years spent at Eastern Military Academy located in OHEKA Castle, named after the multi-millionaire Otto Hermann Kahn, who had his castle built on Long Island. It was the second largest residence built in the U.S.A., and it is shown briefly in the opening newsreel of the classic film, CITIZEN KANE.
  • "Lonely Boy at Home" -- His fears as a neglected child in the 1950s with his main enjoyment coming from radio and television (especially watching vintage films), and his weekly visits to the local theater to see favorite movies and begin his fascination with film music.
  • "Remembering Bill and Electric Elvis" -- Roger's work for the popular and influential Cleveland disc jockey, Bill Randle, who introduced Elvis Presley on national television in 1956.
  • "Suffering Songwriter" -- His frustrating years spent trying to get his songs recorded and released by a record company.
  • "Meeting The Shakers"-- interviews with several members of America's oldest religious communal society, The Shakers, and the historic meeting between several members of the Sabbathday Shaker community and the distinguished composer, Aaron Copland, which Roger had arranged in 1974.

This multimedia disc is playable on any computer.

The disc also includes over 75 pictures and a music album with 30 songs from the 1940s, '50s, 60's and '70s, including 10 of Roger's songs:
